New Delhi, Oct 19 The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has regularised 1,467 sanitation workers over the past two months and plans to regularise around 7,630 more over the next three months, Mayor Pravesh Wahi said on Monday.

Around 400 more sanitation workers are expected to be regularised before Diwali, Wahi said at a press conference at the civic body’s headquarters.

The move comes amid efforts to address employment-related concerns of sanitation workers, who form a key part of the city’s municipal waste management and cleanliness operations, according to an official statement.

According to the mayor, the MCD has appointed 542 individuals as sanitation workers on a daily-wage basis on compassionate grounds.

In October, 505 sanitation workers from the 1998-2000 and 2000-2002 batches were regularised, while 109 dependants of deceased workers were appointed on compassionate grounds, he said.

It promoted 111 assistant sanitation inspectors to the post of sanitation inspector during the same month, Wahi said.

“The regularisation of 1,467 sanitation workers is not merely an administrative decision but also a significant step towards recognising their years of hard work and service,” the mayor said.

He added that the move would provide greater employment stability and social security to the workers and their families.
