Chandigarh, Oct 19 Punjab BJP chief Kewal Singh Dhillon has said Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state on Tuesday will spark new hope for families affected by drugs, as their concerns will be heard seriously and efforts will be made to ensure justice for them.
Shah said on Sunday that he will visit Punjab on October 20 and meet the family members of those who recently lost their lives for raising their voices against the drug menace in Mansa, Sangrur and Gurdaspur districts.
The Union home minister also alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has spared no effort in “pushing the state into the abyss of drugs”.
Dhillon said on Monday that Shah would meet the family of Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa, the family of Gulzar Singh in Toor Banjara village in Sangrur and the family of Bikramjit Singh in Mari Panwan village in Gurdaspur.
In a statement, Dhillon said given the drug problem in Punjab and the growing concern among people, the home minister’s visit to the state is extremely significant.
He also thanked Bhim Singh, the father of Jhota, for expressing his faith in Shah.
Dhillon said the people of Punjab and the affected families want concrete action against drugs and justice for the victims. He expressed hope that the home minister’s intervention would ensure that these cases are pursued seriously.
Targeting the AAP government, Dhillon said at a time when Punjab is struggling with the serious problem of drugs and people are waiting for justice, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit abroad raises several questions.
Mann is currently on a visit to France.
Dhillon said Punjab needs a government that delivers results on the ground rather than merely issuing statements.
According to him, while families across Punjab continue to suffer from the devastating impact of drugs, the performance of the state government is facing persistent scrutiny.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah are committed to making Punjab drugs-free, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said.
With this objective, a commitment has been made to eliminate drugs from Punjab by December 31, 2029, he added.
Dhillon said the battle against drugs is an effort to safeguard the future of Punjab’s youngsters.
He said freeing Punjab from the menace of drugs requires strict action, dismantling drug-trafficking networks and taking concrete steps to rehabilitate people affected by substance abuse. Dhillon said the BJP-led Centre would remain committed to making Punjab drugs-free and ensuring justice for the affected families.
