Mumbai, Oct 19 Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad on Monday alleged that a “jungle raj” prevailed in Mumbai, claiming the safety of artistes and public representatives is severely at risk.

A party delegation led by the Lok Sabha MP met Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti to raise concerns over the firing incident involving actor Tiger Shroff, rising crimes against women, and the suicide of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode.

Commissioner Bharti informed the delegation that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the Crime Branch are jointly investigating the Wakode case, assuring that appropriate action will be taken against those involved once the probe is complete, Gaikwad said in a post on X.

The delegation also raised the issue of police personnel allegedly entering the Congress office and taking action against tribal students. Bharti asked the party to provide evidence of the incident and assured action against those responsible, she said.

Describing the current environment as “jungle raj”, she claimed the state lacked a competent, full-time home minister.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis holds the Home portfolio.

The former state minister said that while the Mumbai police has a long and distinguished tradition, recent law and order issues have severely tarnished its image.

“The authority they once commanded is no longer there. If the image needs to improve, the awe needs to be reestablished,” she said.

Gaikwad further claimed that Mumbai ranked second in the country in terms of incidence of crime, and said the safety of public representatives and artistes was severely at risk.
