New Delhi, Oct 15 Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Thursday announced Sukhna wetland in Chandigarh and Sauj Jheel in Uttar Pradesh as Ramsar sites, taking India’s tally to 103.
Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an environmental treaty established in 1971.
In a post on X, Yadav said that these additions reaffirm the country’s ongoing efforts to conserve its rich wetland ecosystems and strengthen the ecological, climatic, and livelihood benefits they provide.
“This milestone highlights the importance PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s government has been placing on wetlands in conserving biodiversity, enhancing water and climate security, and sustaining local livelihoods,” he added.
The Ramsar Convention is one of the first modern treaties between nations for conserving natural resources.
It aims to stop the loss of wetlands globally and to conserve, through wise use and management, those that remain.
In designating a wetland as a Ramsar site, countries agree to establish and oversee a management framework aimed at conserving the wetland.
