Gurugram, Oct 15 A wanted criminal involved in cow smuggling and ATM thefts was killed during a police encounter near Sohna on Thursday morning, officials said.

Mohammad Shahid alias Advani (27), a resident of Kharkhari village in the Tauru area of Nuh district, died on the spot during the encounter while his two associates managed to escape. Two cows were found in Advani’s SUV.

Police said at 4:30 am on Thursday, the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Nuh team received information that Advani and his associates were transporting two cows in a vehicle.

Upon receiving the information, the police intercepted the vehicle near Silani village at the Gurugram-Nuh border.

An exchange of fire ensued after suspects opened fire on the police team. In the police retaliation, Advani was shot and died on the spot, while his two accomplices managed to escape.

According to officials, Advani escaped from the custody of Gurugram Crime Branch in 2018, and ever since, police forces from various states have been searching for him. However, Advani evaded arrest for around eight years.

Police on Thursday described the encounter as a “major success”.

“Advani was a notorious criminal with over 30 serious criminal cases registered against him. He was accused of being involved in cattle smuggling and uprooting of ATMs,” said a spokesperson of the Nuh Police.
