Amaravati, Oct 15: Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha has appointed 28 IAS officers as general observers to ensure free and fair conduct of the upcoming local body elections across the state.
The appointment comes after the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) announced the schedule on October 14 for the second ordinary elections to 123 urban and rural local bodies. The election process is expected to continue until the first week of December 2026.
According to an official press release, Punetha directed the general observers to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, transparent and impartial manner.
Model Code of Conduct Comes into Force
The State Election Commissioner said the Model Code of Conduct came into effect following the announcement of the election schedule. He instructed the observers to strictly monitor compliance with election rules and take note of any violations of the code.
The general observers will guide election officials at various levels and closely supervise the election process to ensure that all procedures are followed properly.
Poll Management App to Monitor Elections
Punetha highlighted the importance of the Poll Management App developed by the State Election Commission. The application provides information related to voter management, polling stations and election procedures.
He asked the observers to make effective use of the app to monitor election arrangements and improve coordination during the polling process.
Security Arrangements for Local Body Polls
The SEC also directed the general observers to coordinate with district police authorities and ensure adequate security arrangements throughout the elections.
Punetha emphasised that every voter must be able to exercise their voting rights without fear, pressure or inducement. He urged officials to create a safe and impartial environment for voters across Andhra Pradesh.
The appointment of 28 IAS officers is aimed at strengthening election monitoring, ensuring compliance with the Model Code of Conduct and facilitating peaceful and transparent local body elections in the state.
