Guwahati, Oct 14 Asom Gana Parishad chief Atul Bora on Wednesday said that regionalism was not just a political ideology for the party but a commitment to protect Assam’s interests and ensure its all-round development.
Addressing AGP workers in Dhemaji on the party’s 42nd foundation day, he pledged that the party would move forward unitedly, taking the new generation along, to build a self-reliant, progressive and prosperous Assam.
“The AGP’s ascent does not mean strengthening the party alone. What it truly means is to gain people’s trust and confidence, protect the interest of the state and its people and also its all-round development,” said Bora, the state panchayat minister.
He told the gathering that the present times call for instilling a sentiment of regionalism among the youth so that they can work in realising the state’s interests.
Party Working President Keshab Mahanta said AGP is the “protector of the indigenous people”. “The AGP has always strived for progressive nationalism. In the days ahead, we will continue work on the regionalism front going by people’s wishes,” he said.
AGP is a partner in the ruling NDA alliance. The party’s foundation day celebrations were attended by BJP ministers Ranoj Pegu and Jayanta Malla Baruah along with the regional party’s two MPs Birendra Prasad Baishya and Phanibhushan Choudhury.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his warm wishes to the AGP on the occasion. In a social media post, he said the AGP has been a close partner of the NDA government in shepherding the state’s development journey.
AGP President Bora also said that the party, guided by the history of sacrifice, the ideals of regionalism, and progressive nationalism, has been relentlessly working for the interests of Assam.
“With the resolve for unity, harmony, and development, we are steadfastly committed to the unstoppable journey of building a strong, prosperous, and self-reliant Assam,” Bora said in an X post.
The AGP was formed on October 14, 1985, at the Golaghat convention after the signing of the historic Assam Accord, which brought to an end the six-year-long agitation against infiltrators in the state.
