New Delhi, Oct 15: President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Union Minister of State L Murugan, bringing his tenure in the Union Council of Ministers to an end with immediate effect.
Murugan had resigned as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs on Tuesday. In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said he wanted to return to Tamil Nadu to focus on strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.
According to a communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President accepted his resignation on the advice of the Prime Minister under Clause (2) of Article 75 of the Indian Constitution.
Third Minister of State to Resign
L Murugan’s resignation is the third departure of a Minister of State from the Union Council of Ministers in recent months. George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu had also resigned in June and July, respectively, after the BJP did not renominate them for the Rajya Sabha elections.
L Murugan’s Rajya Sabha Membership
Murugan has been a Rajya Sabha member since September 2021. He was re-elected to the Upper House in April 2024 from Madhya Pradesh, and his current term is scheduled to end in April 2030.
He has also expressed his intention to give up his Rajya Sabha membership.
Cabinet Reshuffle Speculation Grows
L Murugan’s resignation has triggered speculation about a possible reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers. However, no official announcement regarding a cabinet reshuffle has been made.
His decision to return to Tamil Nadu is expected to focus attention on the BJP’s organisational activities in the state as the party works to strengthen its political presence there.
