Aizawl, Oct 14 Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday directed officials and contractors to expedite work on the Rs 500-crore Aizawl bypass project to ensure that the strategic road is completed within the stipulated January 2028 deadline, officials said.

Majumdar, who inspected the ongoing construction of the 45-km bypass under the PM-DeVINE scheme, visited the Sihhmui base camp and interacted with state Public Works Department officials and the executing agency.

The Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region directed the contractor to deploy additional labourers and machinery to ensure timely completion of the project.

The western bypass, which will connect Sihhmui in Sairang with Muallungthu, about 19 km south of Aizawl, is expected to ease traffic congestion in Aizawl and improve connectivity to Lengpui Airport, Sairang railway station, the Industrial Growth Centre at Luangmual, Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) and southern Mizoram.

The road will also pass near the approach road to Reiek, a major tourist destination, officials said.

Majumdar said an additional approach road connecting Aizawl city with the bypass could be constructed with state government funds to maximise the project’s utility.

Officials also sought inclusion of tourism-oriented infrastructure and beautification along the bypass under the forthcoming phase of PM-DeVINE, saying such facilities would boost tourism and improve road safety.

Sanctioned in February 2024, the project was awarded to RG Buildwell Engineers Pvt Ltd, with work commencing on January 16, 2026, according to officials.

Around 33.61 per cent of the construction has been completed so far, with the entire project scheduled for completion by January 16, 2028, they said.
