Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 15 Keralam is exploring the possibility of developing farm tourism on abandoned properties belonging to various government departments as part of efforts to promote experiential tourism, Tourism Minister P C Vishnunadh said on Thursday.

The proposal was discussed at a recent meeting with Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty, who suggested exploring the potential of such properties for farm tourism, he said while replying to a question in the Assembly.

“There are several places where such initiatives can be implemented. If MLAs suggest suitable locations, the Tourism Department intends to take the initiative to introduce farm tourism in those places,” he said.

Replying to a question on measures to attract domestic and foreign tourists, the minister said the government was exploring various initiatives as part of the growing focus on experiential tourism.

In response to a separate question raised by M Vijin MLA, the minister said the government would provide financial assistance for the Malabar Jalotsavam boat race this year.

“The government generally extends support to boat races because they contribute significantly to the growth of tourism,” he said.

Vijin sought steps to include the Malabar Jalotsavam, held in the Kuppam-Mangalassery river in his constituency Kalliaaseri, in the Champions Boat League.

He said the event attracted tens of thousands of people and was the only boat race held in the Malabar region this year.

He also sought financial assistance for the event, noting that the government support had played a major role in the success of boat races in the state.
