Patna, Oct 17 The Patna High Court has rejected the bail plea of a person who was arrested in Bihar’s East Champaran district with fake currency notes.
A Division Bench of Justices Rajeev Ranjan Prasad and Sunil Datta Mishra, on October 14, turned down the appeal of Md Waris, a resident of Bhojpur district, who challenged an order passed by the NIA court at Patna, which had refused to grant him bail.
Waris was arrested, along with his aides Saddam and Jakir Hussain, by the police in East Champaran district on September 5, 2024, when the trio was riding a motorcycle without a number plate.
They were found to be in possession of fake currency with a face value of Rs 1.95 lakh, and during interrogation they confessed to have “transported counterfeit notes many times, from Pakistan via Nepal, to one Sarfaraz alias Muzaffar Ahmad in Jammu and Kashmir”.
The case was handed over to the National Investigating Agency a few months later.
The High Court refused to interfere with the impugned order passed by the trial court “keeping in view the seriousness of the allegations and the severity of the punishment attached to the offences alleged”.
On the plea of the petitioner’s counsel that Waris has been in jail for a little over two years, the court said it “cannot be said to be an inordinate period of incarceration”.
However, the court also directed the lower court to “expedite the trial” and conduct hearing “on a day-to-day basis unless it becomes imperative to adjourn the matter for a cogent reason”.
