Mumbai, Oct 15 Late arrival of sea breeze during the day and anti-cyclonic circulation over Gujarat and southwest Madhya Pradesh are among the factors that are leading to a rise in mercury levels in capital Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, meteorologists said on Thursday.
The Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from the state and there are no signs of winter chill setting in. Temperatures across several parts of the state have been hovering around 35 degrees Celsius, an unusual phenomenon in the state for October.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave for Mumbai for October 16.
“There is anti-cyclonic circulation over southwest Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. In this phenomenon, the wind subsides and there is warming. The surface is dry as there is no rainfall. Dry and hot wind is getting transferred from Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat,” Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Meteorology at Skymet Weather Services, said.
The sea breeze is also getting delayed, especially in the case of Mumbai, he said.
“The sea breeze sets in around 12 noon, but it is now taking place at around 2-3 pm,” Palawat added.
According to him, some relief from the prevailing heat is expected next week.
“Sea breeze is likely to set in early and the effects of the anti-cyclone will come down,” Palawat added.
