Bengaluru, Oct 16 The newly opened Assam Bhavan in Bengaluru will deepen ties between Assam and Karnataka and serve the city’s Assamese community, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.

The four-storey Assam Bhavan at Ramohalli will serve as a venue for community programmes and meetings, house visiting officials from Assam and offer traditional Assamese cuisine, Sarma said at its inauguration, according to a press release.

The facility has five conference halls, three VVIP and VIP rooms, 26 small rooms, 36 large rooms and two two-bedroom houses, besides a restaurant, a gym and indoor sports facilities.

The Bhavan is expected to benefit people travelling from Assam to Bengaluru for medical treatment and education, given the engineering and medical colleges in the vicinity, and to serve the city’s estimated four lakh Assamese residents.

Construction began in 2016 but stalled over issues involving the Karnataka government’s Revenue Department. Work resumed in 2022 after they were resolved.

“I would like to thank the Karnataka government for resolving all the issues and enabling the completion of the building,” Sarma said.

Speaking at the event, Sarma said investment agreements worth Rs 5 lakh crore had been signed in Assam, with projects worth Rs 4 lakh crore already under implementation, contributing to the state’s infrastructure development.

He said industrial growth in Assam would create more jobs locally and reduce the need for young people to migrate to other states to work as security personnel.

Assam Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta said a new industrial estate would soon be announced in Bengaluru.
