New Delhi, Oct 23 The Union environment ministry on Friday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to actively engage with truck and bus associations for faster adoption of benefits under the ‘Parivartan’ scheme for replacing old commercial vehicles to tackle air pollution.
The suggestion was made by Secretary, Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Narendra Bhooshan, during a meeting to review the action plans of the Uttar Pradesh government and urban local bodies to tackle air pollution in Delhi-NCR, according to a press note.
The secretary reviewed various interventions such as redevelopment of roads, traffic decongestion at hotspots, deployment of electric buses and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and establishing solid waste processing facilities, the press note said.
He also examined measures like remediation of legacy waste dump sites, construction and demolition waste processing facilities and secondary collection centres, and monitoring and enforcement of air pollution control measures at construction sites and industries.
At the meeting, Bhooshan suggested that the Transport Department should play a facilitative and proactive role in providing no objection certificates (NOC) for shifting old vehicles out of NCR, the press note said.
Moreover, the secretary suggested that Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCC) — already functional in several cities — can integrate monitoring and enforcement actions such as remote monitoring of construction sites, tracking of vehicles carrying construction and demolition waste and solid waste, mechanical road sweeping, traffic decongestion and functioning of mechanical road sweepers.
