New Delhi, Oct 22 With rains lashing several parts of Tamil Nadu due to the active northeast monsoon, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday appealed to party leaders and workers to reach out to families in the affected areas and help with relief work.

The rain triggered a surge of water at the falls in districts of Tamil Nadu and sharply increased water levels in reservoirs across the state.

“My thoughts are with everyone affected by the heavy rains in Tamil Nadu. I appeal to Congress leaders and workers to reach out to families in the affected areas and help with relief,” Gandhi said on X.

“Please work closely with the local authorities, and give special attention to the elderly and the most vulnerable. To my sisters and brothers in Tamil Nadu: we stand with you. Please stay safe,” the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha said.

The Congress is part of the TVK-led coalition government in the state.

Heavy overnight rain inundated parts of Chennai as well as multiple southern districts, with Sankarankoil reeling under significant waterlogging due to intense downpours.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay visited the State Emergency Operation Centre at Ezhilagam on Thursday and inspected the preparedness and coordination activities.

He reviewed statewide monsoon preparedness, emergency response measures, conditions across districts, and ongoing relief operations amidst the continuing heavy rains.
