Gurugram, Oct 21 The smoke from fireworks on the night of Dussehra has made the air in Gurugram toxic, as on Wednesday morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 205 for Gurugram and 235 for Manesar, both of which fall into the ‘poor’ category, according to an official.
Just two days ago, the AQI was at 132, indicating a surge of 73 points within 72 hours.
By evening, the AQI ranged from 157 to 193, moving into the “unhealthy” category. To address this, the Pollution Control Board has initiated an inspection drive, and the health department has issued an advisory, the official added.
Environmental experts warn that if this situation is not controlled before Diwali, the air quality index could soar past 400, reaching the ‘severe’ category.
According to the Meteorological Department, wind speeds have decreased to between 5 and 8 kilometres per hour. As temperatures drop, fine particulate matter settles and forms a layer in the air, inhibiting the dispersion of pollutants.
Manesar’s air quality index has remained above 200 for the fourth consecutive day.
Regarding the possibility of more toxic substances being released into the air during Diwali, a team from the Pollution Control Board inspected a firecracker warehouse in Chandu village and sent samples to the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).
Harish Sharma, the Regional Officer of the board, stated that all firecracker warehouses will be inspected with police personnel accompanying the team. Only ‘green’ firecrackers – those carrying specific identification marks – will be allowed for sale.
The health department’s advisory highlights that prolonged exposure to poor-quality air can lead to respiratory issues and eye irritation. It recommends avoiding morning walks and wearing masks.
