Guwahati, Oct 21 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the sacrifices of police personnel had helped the state achieve peace, with militancy at near-zero levels and crime sharply declining.
The chief minister said six police personnel had died in the line of duty in Assam over the past year.
“We will protect that peace, whatever it takes,” Sarma told reporters after paying tribute to police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty on Police Commemoration Day.
“On behalf of the people of Assam, I laid a wreath in honour of the 900-plus Assam Police personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice for Aai Asomi since Independence. Their courage and devotion to the motherland will never be forgotten. A grateful state will always remember them,” he said.
Sarma said the courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of police personnel to protecting people would remain a source of strength and inspiration for the state.
The entire country was remembering police personnel who had made the supreme sacrifice, while their colleagues and people across Assam were paying their respects and expressing gratitude for their service, he said.
Police Commemoration Day is observed across India on October 21 every year to honour police and paramilitary personnel who have died in the line of duty.
The day commemorates the 1959 incident in which 10 Central Reserve Police Force personnel were killed by Chinese troops in Ladakh.
