Dehradun, Oct 19 Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for five projects worth a total of Rs 20.55 crore at the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University campus in Selakui.
The projects included three works worth Rs 20.21 crore for which foundation stones were laid and two projects worth Rs 34 lakh that were inaugurated.
Dhami laid the foundation stone for a proposed administrative building, an amphitheatre, and a ‘Nakshatra Vatika’ (astronomical garden) on the university campus. He also inaugurated the university’s main entrance and a dental hospital.
Addressing the event, the chief minister said that the university was playing a pivotal role in the development of medical education in the state and in shaping the future of its youth.
The new facilities will provide students with a better academic environment and will also accelerate the development of the region, he said.
“The state government aims to ensure that every student pursuing medical education in the state is equipped to serve as a skilled doctor, nursing officer, or other healthcare professional,” Dhami said.
He said the state government had submitted a proposal to the Union Health Ministry for setting up a super-speciality hospital on the university campus. Further action would be taken after the Centre’s approval, he added.
Dhami said five government medical colleges are operational in the state, with two more under construction. Nine nursing colleges and three nursing schools were also functioning in Uttarakhand, and super-speciality services were being expanded at the medical colleges in Dehradun, Haldwani, and Srinagar.
A modern cancer institute is being constructed in Haldwani, while facilities at district hospitals and community health centres are being strengthened, he said.
An AIIMS satellite centre is also being built in Kichha in Udham Singh Nagar district for Rs 351 crore, which will provide access to modern healthcare services to a large population in the region, the chief minister added.
