Dehradun, Oct 19 Amid the festive season, the state government has decided that shopkeepers will have to mandatorily mention the expiry date of sweets from October 26.

Food Safety Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey has issued formal orders in this regard. Previously, such information was mandatory only for pre-packaged food items. For loose sweets, consumers had no way of knowing when they were prepared or how long they remained safe for consumption.

The order issued on October 17 mentions, “Recent enforcement and inspection activities at sweet shops have revealed that businesses engaged in the manufacturing and sale of sweets often fail to provide consumers with information regarding the date of manufacture and the expiry date of these products.”

“It has been decided that within the borders of the State of Uttarakhand—effective from 26/10/2026—for all unpackaged (loose) sweets and bakery products displayed or stored for sale,” it will be mandatory to display the date of manufacture and the expiry date on the containers or trays in which these items are kept for sale, the order said.

The order further mentions that the shelf-life of sweets and bakery items typically ranges from one to 30 days, depending on the nature of the product.
