Kozhikode (Keralam), Oct 19 Newly appointed Keralam State Waqf Board chairman M C Mayin Haji on Monday said Munambam residents should not be evicted and should be treated with humanitarian consideration.

More than 600 families in Munambam, a coastal village in Ernakulam district, are affected by a dispute over around 400 acres of land claimed by the Waqf board.

The residents, however, maintain that they purchased the land from the Farook College Management Committee and have been living there for decades.

The issue was widely raised during the 2025 local body elections and this year’s state assembly elections.

Last week, the state government reconstituted the State Waqf Board, appointing a new nine-member board headed by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader Mayin Haji.

In a Facebook post, Haji said, “I do not hold the view that Munambam residents should be evicted. It is my wish that they should be treated with humanitarian consideration.”

He said the matter was pending before the court and was not under the consideration of the Waqf board.

“As chairman of the board, commenting on arguments in a case pending before the court would be sub judice,” he said.

Haji said the government and the court were authorised to decide on the Munambam issue and that the Waqf board would support whichever decision was reached.
