Palghar, Oct 19 Five persons were booked in Maharashtra’s Palghar district for allegedly abducting and assaulting two tribal brothers after the duo refused to work in a sugarcane field due to family issues, a police official said on Monday.
Devidas Nivrutti Bhoye, a resident of Phanaspada in Shendyachimet in Mokhada taluka, and his brother Navnath were beaten up after they wanted to return an advance of Rs 2,85,000 taken from sugarcane farm owner Mhasku Maharnawar of Karjat in Ahilyanagar district since they were unable to work due to family issues, the official said.
“Despite offering to return the money, the siblings, who belong to the marginalised Katkari community, were abducted from Palghar and Nashik, taken to Karjat in Ahilyanagar and thrashed during illegal confinement on October 16,” he said.
After being alerted by Shramjeevi Sanghatana functionary Pandu Malik, a Mokhada police team under inspector Ajit Sable rescued the siblings, the official said.
Five persons, including Maharnawar, have been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, the official said.
