New Delhi, Oct 19 Delhi BJP workers from the Northeast on Monday staged a protest and marched towards the Congress headquarters, demanding the expulsion of party MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Led by Delhi BJP general secretary Yogita Singh, the protesters gathered near Andhra School on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg. Delhi BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha president C L Meena was also present.

Addressing the protesters, Singh questioned the Congress over its alleged inaction against Akoijam and claimed that a JNU internal committee had found the professor responsible for misconduct.

“The Congress should expel the MP from the party,” Singh said, accusing the party of failing to act on the allegations.

Akoijam, the Congress MP from Inner Manipur, was a professor at the Centre for Social Systems under JNU’s School of Social Sciences. The university dismissed him on October 9.

Singh also questioned whether the Congress supported the alleged demand for sexual favours in exchange for academic marks, saying such conduct could not be tolerated.

Referring to the complainants, she said approaching authorities over sexual harassment was not easy and claimed that 11 women students had come forward to raise the issue.

Singh said the allegations raised serious concerns about women’s dignity and safety and called for accountability. She urged Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to take a stand on the matter.

The protesters demanded action against Akoijam, accusing the Congress of maintaining silence on the issue.
