Imphal, Oct 18 Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Sunday said he is keen to contest next year’s Manipur assembly elections if the party offers him a ticket.

His comment comes at a time when he is facing a sexual harassment case and was dismissed from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a professor.

Speaking at an event here, Angomcha said, “I am ready to fight elections from Keishamthong (in Imphal West district). If the party offers me a ticket, I will contest the Keisamthong assembly constituency. This decision is for the future of the state.”

The Manipur assembly elections are due next year.

Angomcha had recently appeared before investigators at the Vasant Kunj North Police Station in New Delhi in connection with the sexual harassment case. The academic was booked on October 11 on a complaint of JNU’s chief security officer.

Akoijam, a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU’s School of Social Sciences, was dismissed on October 9 following an inquiry into sexual harassment allegations against him. He has denied the charges.

According to reports, at least 11 female students filed complaints against him in May, alleging that he invited students to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings or gatherings and would try to harass them.

The Congress MP from Inner Manipur termed the university’s action a “witch hunt” and claimed that he was not allowed to respond to the inquiry committee’s findings.
