Indore, Oct 18 The Madhya Pradesh government is developing a Rs 150 crore memorial in Indore to showcase the life and legacy of legendary ruler Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, officials said on Sunday.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inspected the ongoing construction near Lalbagh Palace and directed officials to include the palace, Rampur Kothi, Champa Bawdi and a Shiva temple in an integrated development plan for the memorial, enabling tourists to explore the historic and cultural sites together.
“The memorial is being designed with modern audio-visual technology to help visitors understand the life and achievements of Ahilyabai Holkar. Around 50 per cent of the building’s construction has been completed. The project is targeted for completion before the Simhastha Kumbh Mela to be held in Ujjain in 2028,” architect Himanshu Dudhwadkar told PTI.
Known for good governance and a commitment to justice, Ahilyabai Holkar (1725-1795) ruled the Indore princely state from 1767 to 1795.
She promoted agriculture, trade and the weaving industry and commissioned temples, ghats and dharamshalas at major pilgrimage sites across the country.
During his visit, Yadav also inaugurated a state-of-the-art centre, built under public-private partnership (PPP), for screening cancer and other diseases at the government-run Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital.
The CM also took part in the ‘Chunari Yatra’ organised amid Navratri by former Indore MLA Sudarshan Gupta.
