Jaipur, Oct 16 A 17-year-old Class 10 student died after allegedly being assaulted by a group of youths in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district following a dispute over verbal abuse, police said on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Rohit Kumar, a resident of Ajay Nagar in Ajmer. He died during treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Hospital on Thursday night, they said.

Ramganj SHO Haripal Singh said the incident occurred on October 7 when Rohit had gone to attend a birthday party with his friends.

According to the police, an argument broke out between one of Rohit’s friends and a youth identified as Manoj. When Manoj allegedly began hurling abuses, Rohit intervened and asked him to stop.

Later, Manoj allegedly arrived at Bhagwanganj crossing with 10 to 12 people and assaulted Rohit and his friends.

Rohit sustained serious injuries to his nose in the attack. He informed his father, who took him to the police station, following which he was admitted to JLN Hospital.

Police registered a case on October 8 under provisions relating to assault and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Rohit underwent surgery on October 13 and was discharged the following day.

However, he developed abdominal discomfort on the night of October 14 and was readmitted to the hospital on October 15.

He died during treatment around 10 pm on Thursday, his family said.

The SHO said a murder charge has now been added to the case following the student’s death.
