Bengaluru, Oct 16 Fifteen sweet manufacturers and food business operators in Karnataka were issued notices on Friday for alleged safety violations, including unhygienic practices and non-compliance with FSSAI licensing requirements, the Food Safety and Drugs Administration said.

The action followed a special inspection drive by the department’s Food Safety Wing at sweet manufacturing units and sales outlets across the state ahead of the festival season, on the directions of Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader, officials said.

On the second day of the drive, officials inspected 90 units and outlets under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration) Regulations, 2011, according to a department statement.

They collected 145 food samples and sent them to government laboratories for analysis to assess their quality and compliance with food safety standards.

The inspections revealed unhygienic food preparation and storage conditions, the absence of medical fitness certificates for food handlers and labelling deficiencies, the department said.

Notices were issued to 15 units and food business operators, while two operators were fined a total of Rs 7,000, it said.

The department said inspections would continue and warned of stringent legal action against those violating food safety and quality standards.
