Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu), Oct 16 AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday criticised the state government over its handling of price rise of commodities and alleged poor planning regarding water release from Mettur Dam for paddy (Samba crop) cultivation.

Sharply criticising the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, the former chief minister pointed out that the skyrocketing prices of essential goods, such as rice rising to Rs 100 per kilogram, have severely impacted the poor and economically disadvantaged families. He accused the state government for allegedly failing to take proactive measures to stabilise the prices of commodities.

The price of sugar, tamarind, pulses, and other groceries has surged by approximately 40 per cent, he claimed.

Speaking to reporters here, Palaniswami faulted the government for “poor planning” regarding the release of water from the Mettur Dam for Samba paddy crop cultivation, pointing out that water was released for only 45 days, which was insufficient for the full cultivation cycle.

He argued that this “failure” would negatively impact farmers and lead to future drinking water shortages in 20 districts.

Further, he accused the government of failing to exert pressure on the neighbouring Karnataka government to secure Tamil Nadu’s rightful share of Cauvery water as per Supreme Court orders.
