New Delhi, Oct 16 The Delhi government approved four projects related to modernisation of agricultural markets across the city, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday.

The projects include road repair, a ‘Slow-Speed Weigh-in-Motion System’ at Azadpur market, temporary sheds at Narela market and other projects related to drainage improvements.

“The government is working to develop new markets and improve internal roads, sewerage and pipeline networks, drainage systems and waste disposal facilities, while also preventing stray animals from entering market premises,” Gupta said.

The chief minister said the government wants to go beyond repairs and cosmetic changes to create robust infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of the next 100 years.

At Keshopur Fruit and Vegetable Market, internal roads will be rebuilt at Rs 9.48 crore, making the movement of vehicles, traders and agricultural produce easier.

“Long-term plans are being drawn up after assessing the specific requirements of each market. Consultants have been appointed for the development of Tikri Khampur Fruit and Vegetable Market, and the next steps are underway,” she said in a statement.

At Azadpur market, a modern ‘Slow-Speed Weigh-in-Motion System’ is being installed at the entry and exit gates of Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Market.

“The system will allow commercial vehicles to be weighed without bringing them to a complete stop. Electronic records of vehicle weights will improve transparency in the weighing process and strengthen accountability in market operations,” the chief minister added.

A new project to expand Narela Market is also being taken forward, while construction of a new flower market is planned to begin in the coming financial year.

Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra said, “Work is also progressing towards developing a world-class, modern market at Khampur. The government aims to provide better facilities for farmers, traders and workers and make business operations easier.”

The government said that roads in several areas had not been built for 15-20 years, while some areas had gone without sewerage facilities for 30 years. These issues are now being addressed alongside efforts to modernise the markets.
