Hyderabad, Oct 14 Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday asked officials to take measures to ensure that drinking water and electricity supply do not become problems due to the impact of El Niño.
Reddy, who held a meeting with officials, was informed about the drought-like conditions in the state and the district-wise situation following rainfall deficit because of El Niño.
The CM, who expressed anger over the disruptions to power supply at several places in the state, warned that even the Special Chief Secretary and the CMD of Telangana Power Generation Corporation (Genco) would be suspended for any negligence.
He instructed officials to prepare plans to ensure uninterrupted supply of drinking water.
He directed that steps be taken to use water treated in Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) for construction and other purposes in Hyderabad, an official release said.
He suggested that steps should also be taken for taking care of livestock and for the supply of fodder.
He said Group-1 and Group-2 officers should be appointed as in-charges for each mandal for supervision of measures to deal with the El Niño-induced situation. The officers should report the prevailing situation to the Chief Secretary.
Describing El Niño as a disaster, he said people’s awareness about it should be raised.
Reddy asked why power production has not been enhanced in spite of the possibility of shortage in power.
The Chief Minister also asked why power production in the Yadadri plant is not up to its capacity, though coal linkage has been established from Naini and Mahanadi coal blocks.
Reddy expressed serious displeasure as energy department officials did not respond adequately, though they have been told to ensure power supply to save standing crops. He observed that he is accountable to the people, the release said.
He directed officials to inform the reasons for power supply disruptions, it added.
