Patan (Gujarat), Oct 14 The Congress on Wednesday called off its protest here after the police assured that they would take action on its demands concerning two women party workers jailed for allegedly throwing ink at women BJP activists two days ago.
A ruckus broke out outside the Congress office here on Monday when the BJP Mahila Morcha activists staged a protest against Congress MP and dismissed Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam who is facing sexual harassment allegations.
BJP workers alleged that Congress activists threw ink on them. Two women Congress workers, Bhumiben and Jayaben, were arrested.
Banaskantha Congress MP Geniben Thakor alleged that the BJP Mahila Morcha workers had arrived at the spot with ink and planned to attack her party’s workers.
Under pressure from the BJP’s Ramesh Sindhav, a false FIR was registered by police under BNS Section 117 (C) (causing grievous hurt that results in a permanent disability), claimed Thakor.
Police were yet to ascertain who brought the ink, so why the action was being taken only against Congress workers, the MP asked.
Congress MLA Kirit Patel claimed that the police invoked BNS Section 117(C) against Bhumiben and Jayaben without conducting any preliminary inquiry.
Congress workers led by Thakor, Patel, Chanasma MLA Dinesh Thakor, former MLA Chandanji Thakor, former MP Jagdish Thakor and others took out a protest march to the B Division Police Station on Wednesday.
Some Congress leaders met in-charge Superintendent of Police Prashant Sumbe. MLA Patel later claimed that the SP accepted their demands, after which the protest was called off.
“We demanded that the police immediately obtain medical certificates from the hospital and submit them in the court. If the medical examination does not establish grievous injuries, the police should submit a report to the court seeking the removal of section 117 (C),” he said.
The SP then directed officials to obtain medical certificates from the civil hospital immediately, he said.
As a bail application has already been filed in the sessions court, the medical report will be submitted during the hearing, he added.
The inquiry into a complaint filed by Congress worker Jayaben was handed over to Deputy Superintendent of Police Paresh Renuka, Patel further said.
The SP also accepted the demand to transfer a B Division police sub-inspector over allegations of misbehaviour and use of abusive language against Congress workers, the MLA claimed.
