Nanded, Oct 13 A 55-year-old mechanic died after falling into a well while lowering a water pump in a farm in Nanded district of Maharashtra, barely a month after his daughter-in-law died by suicide, police said.
The deceased was identified as Khanduji Bhimrao Sonsale, a resident of Gurphali village in Hadgaon taluka, inspector Parmeshwar Kadam told PTI.
Sonsale was lowering an electric water pump into a well when the rope slipped from his hands, causing him to fall into the well along with the motor. He reportedly became trapped in the thick mud and silt at the bottom of the well and suffocated, he said.
Farmers and others present nearby, including children, pulled him out and rushed him to the sub-district hospital in Hadgaon, where doctors declared him dead, the official said.
His last rites were performed on Tuesday.
Sonsale was widely known in the area for his expertise in retrieving water pumps stuck deep inside wells and borewells. His technical skills had earned him a reputation among farmers across the taluka. He had also trained his sons in the specialised work.
The family was already struggling to cope with the death of Sonsale’s elder son’s wife, who allegedly died by suicide about a month ago. His sudden death has dealt another blow to the family.
