Chennai, Oct 14 A decomposed body of a 55-year-old missing woman was discovered inside a locked room on the ground floor at the Mylapore MRTS railway station here, police sources said on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Vijaya V from Pallikaranai, had gone missing on October 8.
She was travelling on a Velachery-Chennai Beach train with her daughter to visit the government hospital at Omandurar Estate.
Seeking a restroom, Vijaya stepped off the train at the Mylapore station and reportedly entered a disused room on the station’s upper level in search of a toilet.
Unaware of her mother’s location, Gayathri searched for her before lodging a missing-person complaint with the local police, believing she might have exited the station premises.
Investigating officials believe Vijaya accidentally stepped through an unguarded infrastructural opening on the second floor, plunged through a similar aperture on the floor below and crashed into a locked storage room on the ground level.
The incident went undetected until commuters noticed a strong foul odour four days later and alerted railway staff, who subsequently notified the railway police on Monday.
Railway officials entered the abandoned room and cleared away piles of old desks, broken wooden fixtures, and damaged steel chairs to recover the victim’s body.
Following a preliminary autopsy at the government hospital at Royapettah, authorities ruled out any foul play.
The railway police have registered a case of unnatural death.
