Chennai, Oct 18 The DRI has seized 137 kg of crystal methamphetamine worth over Rs 100 crore in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district, officials said on Sunday, describing it as one of the largest coastal drug hauls in recent years.
Four persons have been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and remanded to judicial custody, a press release said.
Acting on specific intelligence, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officers conducted a surveillance and enforcement operation on October 16 and 17, busting a suspected coastal drug trafficking network, according to the release.
The syndicate was allegedly planning to smuggle the contraband to Sri Lanka through a mid-sea transfer, it said.
During a search in a coastal village in Nagapattinam district, officers recovered six duffel bags containing 27 silver-foil packets, each weighing approximately 5 kg. The packets contained a white crystalline substance suspected to be high-purity methamphetamine, the release said.
In a simultaneous search at the premises of the suspected organiser, the DRI seized Rs 10 lakh in cash, suspected to be proceeds from drug sales. Two four-wheelers and a two-wheeler allegedly used to transport the narcotics were also seized, the release added.
