Nagpur, Oct 18 Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said any change of government in India can take place only through elections, asserting that attempts to force a regime change by rejecting the Constitution will fail.

Speaking to reporters here, Fadnavis slammed Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray over his regime change statement, mocking him for failing to prevent a split in his own party.

Thackeray on Saturday backed senior advocate Prashant Bhushan’s “regime change” call, criticising the alleged violence against those taking part in protests called by the Cockroach Janta Party and other parties in Delhi.

“When his (Uddhav’s) party abandoned Hindutva and the ideology of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, those who wanted to follow Balasaheb’s core principles broke away to form the real Shiv Sena,” Fadnavis said, referring to the 2022 split in the undivided Shiv Sena.

He emphasised that decisions in India are determined through Parliament and the ballot box, not on the streets.

“If you want a regime change, you have to contest polls, win the hearts of the people, and secure a mandate,” the BJP leader said, adding that the Narendra Modi-led government would return to power.

Referring to the recent political upheavals in neighbouring nations such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Fadnavis warned that forces dreaming about orchestrating similar instability in India will not succeed.

“India is anchored by the Constitution drafted by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. The strength of our constitutional framework will defeat all such intentions,” he added.
