New Delhi, Oct 15 The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is planning to rope in IIT Kanpur to develop an Artificial Intelligence-based bus management system, officials said on Thursday.
The Delhi government, which has been seeking to expand its public bus fleet, is looking to upgrade its existing BMS by integrating AI and machine learning to provide better public transport services.
“The matter was discussed in a meeting, and it was decided to collaborate with IIT Kanpur’s AIRAWAT research foundation covering areas such as dynamic duty allocation, payroll management, complaint management, marshal verification and other operational processes,” an official said.
Currently, the DTC has around 6,269 buses, including 4500 electric buses. These buses operate from 52 bus depots across the city.
“The new software system will also integrate its existing CNG and cluster buses into the system, which are running on outdated software,” the officials added.
According to the plan, the BMS will provide functionality for issuance, allocation and management of Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs).
“The system will also enable depot-wise and duty-wise mapping of ETMs to buses, drivers, and conductors, along with tracking of issuance, return, status and usage,” the plan said.
Under the collaboration efforts, BMS will be fully integrated with fare collection systems to ensure seamless data synchronisation, validation of ticketing data, reconciliation of revenue and operational monitoring and reporting without manual interventions.
“The software will also be required to schedule DTC bus routes if any changes are made in real time by the traffic police,” the officials said.
The system will also feature AI-based electric bus charging optimisation, fleet utilisation optimisation and other features.
Earlier, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had said the government is looking to increase its bus fleet to 14,000 by 2028-29 and that the number of bus depots could go up to 90.
