Latur, Oct 14 Sugarcane crop spread over eight acres of land was completely destroyed in a fire in Maharashtra’s Latur district on Wednesday, causing losses to farmers, an official said.
This is the second such incident that occurred in the district in three days.
“Sugarcane crop belonging to five farmers and spread over seven to eight acres of land was gutted in a fire at Ekurga village in Latur taluka around 2 pm on Wednesday,” Talathi Santosh Swami told PTI.
A suspected short circuit at an electricity distribution point (DP) is believed to have triggered the blaze, he said.
A fire tender from a local sugar factory was deployed to extinguish the fire, Swami said.
A panchnama was underway to assess the crop damage, and the assessment was scheduled to be conducted on Thursday, the talathi said.
Earlier, sugarcane cultivated by more than 20 farmers on nearly 52 acres of land was destroyed in a fire on Monday afternoon at Wakdi village in Latur taluka.
