Jamshedpur, Oct 13 A 42-year-old man allegedly axed his two middle-aged sisters to death at their home in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district, with police suspecting a possible link to superstition.
The incident occurred in Babida village in the Dhalbhumgarh police station area in the early hours of Monday, police said.
The deceased, identified as Dulari Soren (52) and Laxmi Mundi (50), were both married and had been staying with their younger brother, Swaroop Tudu, for his treatment, as he had reportedly been experiencing mental health issues for some time, they said.
Tudu had invited an ‘ojha’ (traditional healer) to perform a ritual on Sunday night, which continued till late, they said.
After the ritual, the two sisters went to sleep. Tudu allegedly attacked them with an axe in the early hours of Monday while they were asleep, villagers told police.
The accused did not flee after the killings and surrendered at the police station, officials said.
Police recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination, and Tudu is being interrogated to establish the motive behind the killings.
Dhalbhumgarh police station officer-in-charge Dhiraj Kumar Mishra said the accused had been mentally unstable for some time.
Asked whether the killings were linked to witchcraft, Mishra said the investigation was underway, and the exact motive could be confirmed only after its completion.
