Thane, Oct 13 A couple has allegedly defrauded around 80 home buyers of nearly Rs 50 lakh under the pretext of providing affordable housing in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Tuesday.

Following a complaint, the Thane Rural Police have registered a case against Rajendra More and his wife Leena under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act, 1999, an official said.

The probe has been transferred to the Economic Offences Wing, which has urged victims to come forward with evidence, he said.

According to the police, the couple floated multiple affordable housing projects in Titwala East starting in 2015 and collected money from buyers.

The accused managed to lure around 80 home buyers with promises of low-cost housing, collected approximately Rs 50 lakh from them, and later failed to construct the units or hand over possession of the flats within the promised timeline, misappropriated the funds, and subsequently absconded, police stated.
