New Delhi, Oct 13 Indian Youth Congress national in-charge Manish Sharma and NSUI president Vinod Jakhar on Tuesday visited injured activists at Lady Hardinge Hospital following a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities.

This comes after the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a flash protest at Rajiv Chowk metro station, demanding Kumar’s resignation over allegations of electoral irregularities. Several protesters, including Jakhar, were detained by police.

Following the protest, Sharma, Jakhar and NSUI national in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar met the injured activists and enquired about their health, the IYC said in a statement, alleging police action against the protesters.

“The right to peaceful protest is a constitutional guarantee, not a privilege; any excessive use of force against student activists must be investigated and those responsible held accountable,” Sharma said.

The IYC demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident and action against those found responsible for any unlawful use of force.

“Students raising their voices on public issues deserve to be heard, not subjected to violence,” the organisation said, calling for restraint by police while managing demonstrations.

The visit came amid protests in Delhi over alleged electoral irregularities and demands for accountability from the Election Commission.

There was no immediate statement by the Delhi Police on claims made by the Congress’ youth wing.
