Aizawl, Oct 13 At least 10 pickup trucks suspected to be illegally heading towards Myanmar for sale were intercepted by local volunteers in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai town on Tuesday, officials said.
The vehicles were stopped by members of the Young Lai Association (YLA), the largest civil society organisation in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) area, in the AOC Veng locality and later handed over to the authorities, they said.
The action followed a recent meeting chaired by the Lawngtlai district administration, which flagged an increase in vehicle theft and the illegal movement of vehicles through the district.
The administration has called for intensified surveillance of stolen vehicles and those allegedly being taken to Myanmar for sale, including new vehicles purchased using Indian documents or improper papers.
In a separate operation, Mizoram Police, with assistance from their Assam counterparts, recovered a stolen scooter from Cachar district on October 11 and returned it to its owner, police said.
The scooter had allegedly been stolen between Kawnpui and Bilkhawthlir villages and was being taken to Assam for sale.
A resident of New Khamrang village has been arrested in connection with the theft, while further investigation is underway, police said.
