Mumbai, Oct 13 Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday slammed the INDIA bloc’s march to the Supreme Court as an attempt to pressurise the judiciary, and alleged that the Opposition’s single-point agenda is to spread anarchy and instability in the country.
Addressing a news conference, the Shiv Sena leader demanded an apology from the Opposition, terming their march to file a petition against alleged poll irregularities an unprecedented attack on the apex court and a black day in Indian history.
The Opposition on Monday took out “March for Democracy” to the Supreme Court to file a joint petition against SIR and alleged poll irregularities, in a major show of strength in the national capital.
“It was a black Day in Indian history. The morcha to the Supreme Court was an attempt to pressurise the judiciary. This has happened for the first time in the country,” the deputy chief minister said.
He said that while the Opposition has the right to seek justice from the court, staging a morcha to file a petition was an attack on the highest judiciary and an insult.
“I condemn it. They have to apologise to 140 crore people,” Shinde said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had on Monday said that people should persevere and continue the protests, as the country cannot be saved in a day or two, and described the protests as “tandav”.
“This is like Shiva’s dance, and anyone can join Shiva’s ‘baraat’ (wedding procession),” the Leader of the Opposition said.
Shinde claimed that invoking Shiva’s dance is an insult to the God.
If Shiv opens his third eye, then the INDIA bloc will be destroyed, he remarked.
“The Opposition is frustrated. They don’t know what to do. It is a single-point agenda to create confusion and instability, and cause hindrance in the country’s development,” he added.
Shinde claimed that many foreign powers are trying to destabilise the country.
The Opposition keeps citing examples of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal, which had witnessed unrest and change in the regime, he said, accusing it of wanting to give the message of destabilising the country.
“The Opposition was defeated thrice by PM Narendra Modi. If they cannot rule the country, they try to ensure that anarchy is spread. They doubt EVMs and make allegations against the Election Commission,” Shinde said.
He further pointed out that the Opposition had not raised any doubts when it registered victories in Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and is resorting to double standards.
