Meerut, Oct 12 A 27-year-old woman and her eight-day-old son riding a motorcycle died after being run over by a cylinder-laden truck on Monday, police said.
The woman’s husband escaped unhurt in the collision, they said.
According to the police, Sanjay of Mahal village was returning with his wife Priya and their newborn after getting jaundice medication for the baby when the accident occurred near Kali Mata temple on the Daurala-Mussoorie road.
The truck’s wheel ran over the woman and the infant, killing them on the spot.
Villagers caught and assaulted the driver as he tried to flee, and blocked the road, demanding financial assistance and a job for a family member.
An ambulance was also damaged during the protest.
Former MLA Sangeet Som and Samajwadi Party MLA Atul Pradhan reached the spot to placate the agitators.
The blockade was lifted after Som assured them of efforts to secure assistance and a private-sector job for a family member.
The driver, meanwhile, was detained by the police.
The family later protested again as the bodies were being taken to the mortuary.
