Hyderabad, Oct 12 The Telangana government said it would launch a major renewable energy procurement programme to meet the state’s rising electricity demand while ensuring a reliable, affordable and sustainable power supply.
The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TGREDCO) and Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TGGENCO) will issue tenders for a diversified renewable energy portfolio comprising 3,000 MW of solar power integrated with a 6,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), 800 MW of wind power, 2,000 MW of renewable energy round-the-clock (RE-RTC) power and 2,000 MWh of firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) capacity.
A press release on Monday said Telangana was witnessing accelerated economic growth driven by industrial expansion, urbanisation, data centre development, electric mobility, irrigation needs and major infrastructure projects.
The state’s peak electricity demand had already reached around 19,892 MW and was expected to rise significantly in the coming years.
To meet the growing demand while advancing its clean energy goals, the state had adopted a comprehensive strategy to strengthen long-term energy security through large-scale renewable energy procurement, the release said.
The proposed programme was designed to ensure renewable power availability throughout the day, improve grid reliability and reduce dependence on conventional power sources and short-term market purchases.
The projects would be awarded through a transparent competitive bidding process and developed, financed, owned and operated by private-sector developers, the release said.
The approach would enable the state to procure substantial renewable energy capacity without capital investment, budgetary support or a state government guarantee, while ensuring tariff discovery through competitive bidding and regulatory oversight, it added.
