Amaravati, Oct 9: YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has strongly criticised Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu over the failure to implement 34 per cent reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections.
Reacting to the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the Andhra Pradesh government’s petition challenging the High Court verdict on BC reservations, Jagan accused the coalition government of misleading the BC community with electoral promises. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s ruling on the issue and reiterated the 50 per cent ceiling on total reservations.
YS Jagan Calls Chandrababu Naidu ‘Mr. 420’
In a post on social media platform X, Jagan called Chandrababu Naidu “Mr. 420”, accusing him of making promises to people from different sections of society and failing to fulfil them.
“You are Mr. 420 when it comes to making promises to people from every section and then cheating them,” Jagan said.
The YSRCP chief alleged that the coalition government had promised 34 per cent reservations for BCs in local body elections but failed to deliver on that commitment. He said the Supreme Court verdict had exposed what he described as the government’s failure to fulfil its promise to the BC community.
Supreme Court Verdict on 34% BC Reservations
The Supreme Court’s decision has become a major political issue in Andhra Pradesh. The state government had challenged the High Court verdict concerning the implementation of 34 per cent reservations for BCs in local body elections.
The court upheld the High Court’s decision, reiterating the 50 per cent ceiling on total reservations. The development has prompted the YSRCP to question the coalition government’s approach to fulfilling its election promise.
Jagan accused Chandrababu Naidu of raising expectations among BCs by promising a higher reservation quota and demanded that the Chief Minister take responsibility for the outcome.
Jagan Criticises Super Six Promises
Jagan also targeted the coalition government over its Super Six electoral promises. He alleged that the government had failed to fulfil several commitments made to voters before the elections.
The former Chief Minister further accused the coalition government of cancelling welfare schemes implemented during the previous YSRCP regime. According to Jagan, these decisions had affected beneficiaries who depended on government assistance.
He argued that the BC reservation issue was part of a wider pattern of unfulfilled promises made by the coalition government.
Rs. 9,000 Crore Dues Under Vidya Deevena and Vasathi Deevena
Jagan also raised the issue of pending payments under the Vidya Deevena and Vasathi Deevena schemes, which provided financial support to eligible students and their families during the previous YSRCP government.
He alleged that nearly Rs. 9,000 crore remained unpaid under the two schemes. Describing the outstanding dues as a serious betrayal, Jagan said students and their families were being let down by the coalition government.
The YSRCP president used the issue to question the government’s commitment to student welfare and the promises made to the public.
YSRCP Targets Chandrababu Over 143 Election Promises
Jagan also criticised the coalition government’s election manifesto, which contained 143 promises. He described the manifesto as a major deception, alleging that the government had failed to honour its commitments to voters.
He said the promise of 34 per cent BC reservations was another example of what he called misleading assurances made during the election campaign.
The YSRCP chief demanded that Chandrababu Naidu apologise to the BC community for failing to fulfil the reservation promise.
“Mr. Chandrababu, apologise to the BCs at least now,” Jagan said in his post on X.
BC Reservations Become a Major Political Issue in Andhra Pradesh
The Supreme Court verdict has intensified the political debate over BC reservations in Andhra Pradesh. While the opposition has accused the coalition government of failing to honour its electoral commitment, the issue remains central to the debate over political representation for BCs in local bodies.
Jagan’s remarks have added to the pressure on the Chandrababu Naidu government, with the YSRCP demanding accountability over the 34 per cent reservation promise and other election commitments.
