New Delhi, Oct 7 Hundreds of AAP workers protested outside the office of the Delhi chief electoral officer (CEO) at Kashmere Gate on Wednesday, demanding resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj said the party would ask the poll official about the deletion of lakhs of Delhi voters’ names from the electoral roll, demanding the deleted names be restored.
“We don’t have any personal rivalry with the government. We are fighting for the Constitution and democratic rights. We want to cooperate with police,” Bharadwaj said, while speaking during the protest outside the Delhi CEO’s office.
Demanding CEC Kumar’s resignation, protesters raised slogans including “Vote chori nahi chalegi (vote theft won’t go on)” and “Vote chor, gaddi chhor (poll thief vacate your office)”. The protest was attended by AAP MLAs Sanjeev Jha, Jarnail Singh and Kuldeep Kumar, along with a large number of party workers from across Delhi.
“This is injustice,” Bharadwaj asserted, referring to permission given to only three delegates to enter the office and speak with the Delhi CEO.
The AAP earlier protested over the issue at Jantar Mantar on October 2 and at India Gate on October 4. Bharadwaj said the party and its student wing have also participated in protests on October 3.
“BJP cannot lie anymore. They removed 45 lakh voters’ names (in Delhi). If they have to conduct elections with dishonesty, why conduct elections at all?” Bharadwaj said during the protest.
He alleged that votes were deleted during the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections and claimed that around 45,000 votes were deleted from the New Delhi constituency, where former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had contested.
The AAP leader said people from across the country would protest against the CEC on October 10, with Jantar Mantar as the epicentre of the agitation. He said the party would continue its campaign over the issue.
The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded restoration of deleted voters’ names and resignation of CEC Kumar.
The Cockroach Janata Party has called for a protest against Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar on October 10. The AAP said its protests over the issue has continued since October 2, with party leaders and workers participating in demonstrations.
