New Delhi, Oct 6: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of undermining democracy through what he described as “vote chori”.
Speaking to reporters from inside the Akashwani Bhawan premises, where he was stopped by police during the INDIA bloc’s march towards the Election Commission, Rahul Gandhi said those responsible would be held accountable.
“I am not interested in what the BJP says. I am standing here to protect democracy in the country,” Gandhi said, adding that around 300 MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had joined the protest.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that Modi, Shah and Bhagwat had “hijacked” the country through “vote chori” and claimed that CEC Gyanesh Kumar had helped them.
He further said that action would be taken against all those responsible and that nobody would escape accountability.
“What has been done to our country is treason. Nobody is going to escape,” Gandhi said, referring to his allegations against the Prime Minister, Home Minister, RSS chief and Chief Election Commissioner.
Rahul Gandhi Questions Election Commission
Earlier, Gandhi criticised the Election Commission in a post on X, saying that more than 300 Opposition MPs had marched from Parliament to meet the Election Commissioners.
“We represent crores of Indians. Why aren’t the Election Commissioners meeting us?” Gandhi asked, while questioning why police were stopping and threatening the protesters.
The INDIA bloc leaders were seeking to meet the Election Commissioners amid their concerns over the electoral process and were also demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Rahul, Priyanka Enter Akashwani Bhawan
The protest witnessed high drama after Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other leaders entered the Akashwani Bhawan premises while attempting to reach the Election Commission headquarters.
Police stopped the march at Parliament Street near Akashwani Bhawan and the NITI Aayog office.
Several Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien, were detained after police halted the march.
The Opposition parties have intensified their campaign against the Election Commission, alleging irregularities in the electoral process and demanding greater accountability from the poll body.
