Chennai, Sep 25 Tamil Nadu police’s Singappen special force resolved 236 complaints on the spot and helped register 16 criminal cases during a week-long statewide safety drive, officials said on Friday.
According to a press release issued by the Director General of Police office, the special unit’s operations between September 18 and 24 resulted in the tracing of two missing women and four children.
The force rescued five persons with intellectual disabilities, stopped a child marriage and facilitated the re-enrolment of 43 school dropouts.
The SSF conducted 3,607 awareness programmes for students, the public and migrant workers and patrolled 12,942 identified crime-prone areas across the state. The awareness initiatives also encouraged several people to report offences, police said.
Following an awareness session in Mayiladuthurai, a 13-year-old student called the 1091 helpline on September 21 and reported that a 45-year-old man had allegedly sexually abused her at a prawn farm since 2025. The man was arrested under the POCSO Act by the Sirkazhi All Women Police.
In Avadi, a 17-year-old student reported that a 44-year-old man had allegedly stalked her on a train, leading to his arrest by the Korukkupet Railway Police.
In Ramanathapuram, a 36-year-old man was arrested by the Bazaar Police on September 18 for allegedly harassing a 19-year-old woman in public after she refused to share her Instagram ID.
In another incident, an SSF patrol in Mylapore on September 21 apprehended two suspects, Jeeva and Pratap, who allegedly snatched the mobile phone of a 23-year-old woman. The stolen phone and the two-wheeler allegedly used in the crime were recovered, and both men were remanded to judicial custody.
Police urged the public to use the toll-free 1091 helpline to report crimes against women and children and flag unsafe locations requiring preventive measures.
