Kohima, Sep 24 Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Thursday said promotion of Hindi should go hand in hand with preservation of indigenous languages, and stressed that linguistic diversity is one of the greatest cultural strengths of India.
Yadav said Hindi plays an important role as a means of communication among people across different linguistic regions, while indigenous languages keep communities connected to their roots and identity.
He was addressing the prize distribution ceremony of the Hindi Film Song Competition organised by Akashvani Kohima as part of Hindi Pakhwada 2026.
The governor said Nagaland is home to diverse tribes, languages, dialects, traditions and cultural expressions, with every language carrying the history, traditional knowledge, values, songs and stories of a community.
Yadav also called for the spirit of Hindi Pakhwada to continue beyond the fortnight and encouraged people to promote Hindi while respecting other Indian languages and English.
He urged young people to learn more than one language and stressed the need to preserve indigenous languages and the traditional knowledge embedded in them.
Speaking on the Hindi Film Song Competition, Yadav said music has the ability to transcend linguistic boundaries and foster fellowship, while Hindi film songs have become part of the shared cultural memory of generations of Indians.
The governor also highlighted the role of Akashvani in providing news, information, education, music, culture and public messages, particularly in a geographically challenging state like Nagaland.
