New Delhi, Sep 24 The Delhi poll body held special camps for the homeless, transgender persons and sex workers across the national capital to facilitate their participation in the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls, officials said on Thursday.
The two-day camps were held on September 23 and 24 from 5 pm to 9 pm at Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) night shelters and other locations where members of these communities were found, they said.
The poll body has also deployed 605 additional assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) across all Assembly constituencies for the disposal of notices and claims and objections, officials said.
“The 605 AEROs have been deployed in addition to the 297 AEROs already working to ensure that notices, claims and objections are dealt with without delay,” a statement by the office of the Delhi chief electoral officer (CEO) read.
Booth-level officers said the evening timings were chosen keeping in mind the daily routine of many homeless and transgender persons, who often remain on the streets during the day.
“Several homeless people do not have fixed addresses, family records or other documents ordinarily used to establish their identity and residence,” a BLO said, explaining some of the difficulties encountered during the verification process.
He further said that many of them are out on the streets during the day, including for begging and other work, so the camps were scheduled between 5 pm and 9 pm to make it easier for them to approach the officials and submit their forms.
BLOs and other staff from voter centres were present at the camps with electoral rolls and blank enrolment forms. Blank Form-6 applications were distributed to eligible persons, and assistance was provided to those requiring help in filling them, according to a statement.
During the camps held on September 23, filled Form-6 and Form-8 applications were received from people attending them, the statement said.
The special camp was also held on September 24 to collect forms distributed to eligible persons and facilitate their enrolment and updation in the electoral rolls.
