Kolkata, Sep 24 The West Bengal government has allotted around 54.20 acre of land to Websol Energy System Ltd at the Falta Industrial Park here for setting up a greenfield solar cell and module manufacturing facility, the company said on Thursday.
The proposed facility, entailing an investment of Rs 1,500-1,700 crore, will have 4 GW of solar cell capacity and 4 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity, to be developed in two phases of 2 GW each, Websol said in a statement.
The land allotment came after the company evaluated locations close to its existing manufacturing operations at the Falta Special Economic Zone in the state, it said.
The company said its decision to expand in West Bengal builds on more than three decades of operating experience in the state, which provides access to skilled manpower, established supplier relationships and familiarity with the local ecosystem.
The facility will create a larger integrated manufacturing base for Websol in eastern India at a time when domestic solar manufacturing capacity is expanding to meet the country’s growing renewable energy requirements, the statement said.
“When Websol entered solar manufacturing in the mid-1990s, the industry in India was still at a very early stage. Today, solar is becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s energy infrastructure, and the need for strong domestic manufacturing has never been clearer,” Chairman and Managing Director Sohan Lal Agarwal said.
“This land allotment represents the next phase of a journey that began more than three decades ago in West Bengal. It allows us to build at a significantly larger scale while remaining close to an ecosystem, workforce and operating base we know well,” he said.
Websol Executive Director Sanjana Khaitan said the focus now is on execution – moving from land allotment to construction, commissioning and utilisation.
“We have always believed that growth should be measured not just by installed capacity, but by how efficiently that capacity translates into production, delivery and revenue. That is the approach we will continue to follow as we work towards our 2028 targets,” she said.
